Rome was not built in a day.  

It’s an ancient expression. Its origins can be traced back to the mediaeval period, with one of the earliest recorded instances appearing in French literature around 1190. 

The phrase appears in the “Li Proverbe au Vilain” (“The Proverbs of the Common Man”), a mediaeval collection of proverbs written in Old French. The exact line is “Rome ne fu pas faite toute en un jour,” which translates to “Rome was not made all in one day.” 

This reflects the idea that great and enduring accomplishments require time and patience.
